The state government has raised disaster alert levels as Cyclone Murasu nears the coast, while large‑scale repair work continues after Cyclone Arnab caused extensive damage.
Odisha’s disaster management authority has declared the state on high alert ahead of Cyclone Murasu, which is projected to make landfall along the eastern coastline within the next 48 hours. Officials have activated emergency response teams, pre‑positioned relief supplies, and ordered the evacuation of vulnerable coastal villages.
The alert comes as the state continues massive restoration efforts after Cyclone Arnab struck in early May, leaving thousands of homes damaged and critical infrastructure such as power lines, roads and water supply networks in disrepair. State engineers and contractors are working round the clock to restore electricity and clear debris, aiming to complete priority repairs before Murasu arrives.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik urged residents to follow official instructions, avoid unnecessary travel, and secure property against high winds and heavy rain. The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of storm surges up to three metres and sustained winds exceeding 120 km/h.
Authorities have also mobilised the Indian Navy and National Disaster Response Force to assist with rescue operations if needed. The combined focus on restoration and preparedness reflects Odisha’s experience in handling successive cyclones and its commitment to minimizing loss of life and property.
