The Odisha government has prolonged its housing initiative for another two years, aiming to construct an additional 292,000 homes for low‑income families.

The state government of Odisha announced on Monday that its flagship housing programme will be extended for a further two years. The extension is intended to deliver 292,000 additional dwellings, primarily targeting economically weaker sections in rural and urban pockets.

Officials said the decision follows a review of the scheme's progress, which has already provided shelter to thousands of families since its launch. The added timeline will allow authorities to complete pending projects, streamline fund allocation and address bottlenecks in land acquisition.

Funding for the extension will be drawn from the state’s budget and central government grants under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The government expects the new homes to be ready by 2028, boosting the state's housing stock and contributing to its broader goal of universal shelter.

Stakeholders, including local contractors and community leaders, welcomed the move, citing the positive impact on employment and living standards. The administration has pledged regular monitoring to ensure transparent implementation.

The scheme’s continuation underscores Odisha’s commitment to social welfare and aligns with national objectives of reducing housing deficit across India.
