The Odisha government has cleared a Rs 654 crore package to boost flood mitigation and irrigation infrastructure, as decided in recent Technical Advisory Committee meetings.
The state cabinet, through a series of Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) meetings, gave the green light to a Rs 654 crore investment aimed at strengthening flood control and expanding irrigation networks across Odisha. The allocation is part of a broader infrastructure push intended to reduce the impact of seasonal flooding and improve water availability for agriculture.
Key components of the plan include the construction of new embankments, desilting of existing canals, and the installation of modern water‑gate systems in flood‑prone districts. Parallelly, the funding will support the development of lift irrigation schemes and the rehabilitation of deteriorating irrigation channels to enhance crop yields.
State officials indicated that the project will be rolled out over the next three years, with funds drawn from the state’s development budget and central assistance schemes. The initiative is expected to safeguard vulnerable communities, protect arable land, and contribute to Odisha’s long‑term agricultural productivity.
