Northeast India Welcomes Surge of Tourists as Travel Barriers Ease

Newly eased travel rules are allowing tourists to move more freely across the eight states of India's Northeast, a region long celebrated for its hills, rivers and cultural diversity. The relaxation follows a series of infrastructure upgrades, including additional flight routes and improved road links that connect remote hill stations with major metros. State tourism departments have launched promotional campaigns to showcase attractions such as Kaziranga National Park, Sikkim's monasteries and the living root bridges of Meghalaya. Officials say the move aims to boost local economies while preserving the ecological and cultural heritage that draws visitors. The shift marks a transition from a period of limited access to an era where the Northeast is positioned as a mainstream travel destination for both domestic and international tourists.
