A NITI Aayog member urged that the rich indigenous knowledge of regions from Ziro to Manipur must receive scientific backing to ensure its preservation and integration into mainstream development.
During a recent briefing, a member of NITI Aayog highlighted the importance of giving scientific credibility to the indigenous knowledge systems prevalent in the Northeast, spanning from Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh to Manipur. The speaker emphasized that such knowledge, accumulated over centuries, holds potential for sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.
The representative pointed out that many traditional practices—ranging from medicinal plant use to climate‑adaptive agriculture—lack formal scientific validation, which limits their wider acceptance and application. He argued that bridging this gap would not only safeguard cultural heritage but also provide evidence‑based solutions to contemporary challenges.
To address the issue, the NITI Aayog member called for collaborative research initiatives involving universities, local communities, and national science bodies. He suggested establishing dedicated research hubs in the region to systematically document, test, and integrate indigenous practices into policy frameworks.
