The Supreme Court collegium appointed nine practising lawyers as judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, while one of its earlier selections was not confirmed.

The Supreme Court collegium announced the elevation of nine senior advocates to the bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. All nine appointees have extensive litigation experience in the region and will assume office after completing the standard procedural formalities.

The list of names released by the collegium did not include a candidate who had previously been recommended for the same post. Sources said the omission was a routine decision and no official reason was provided.

The appointments are expected to fill several vacancies in the High Court, helping to reduce the backlog of cases. The newly appointed judges will take oath in a ceremony to be held at the High Court premises in Chandigarh.

Legal experts view the inclusion of practising lawyers as a move to bring fresh perspectives to the judiciary, while the exclusion of the earlier pick underscores the collegium's discretion in finalising appointments.
