A suspected batch of poisonous liquor in Bunda tehsil of Sagar district has killed nine people and sent over 25 others to hospitals, officials said.

Sagar district in Madhya Pradesh witnessed a sudden health crisis on Tuesday after a batch of allegedly toxic liquor was consumed in the Bunda tehsil. Local authorities confirmed that nine individuals have died as a result of the poisoning, while more than 25 patients were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The victims, ranging from young adults to middle‑aged men, reported symptoms such as severe vomiting, abdominal pain and loss of consciousness shortly after drinking the liquor. Medical teams administered supportive care, including intravenous fluids and antidotes where applicable.

Police have launched an investigation to trace the source of the illicit liquor and have sealed several shops suspected of selling the contaminated product. The district health officer urged the public to refrain from consuming any unlicensed alcohol and promised regular updates as the probe progresses.

The incident has reignited concerns over the prevalence of illicit liquor in central India, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of licensing norms and heightened community awareness about the dangers of spurious alcohol.
