Former IMF chief Nicholas Stern has called on India to accelerate the expansion of clean power supply for its rapidly growing data‑centre sector.

Former chief of the International Monetary Fund, Nicholas Stern, has urged the Indian government to intensify efforts to provide clean power to data centres across the country. In a statement to Business Standard, Stern highlighted the growing energy demands of India’s digital infrastructure and the need to align them with the nation’s climate goals.

Stern’s remarks come as India’s data‑centre market expands, driven by increasing cloud usage and digital services. He stressed that sustainable power sources are essential to curb the sector’s carbon footprint and to meet the country’s commitments under the Paris Agreement.

The former IMF head called on policymakers to introduce incentives and regulatory frameworks that would make renewable energy more accessible for data‑centre operators. He also suggested that public‑private partnerships could play a key role in scaling up clean energy projects.

Stern’s comments add to a growing chorus of experts urging India to balance its digital growth with environmental responsibility. The government has already announced several initiatives to promote renewable energy, but the data‑centre sector remains a critical area for further action.
