Protesters set fire to an NHPC office and a police station and vandalised the residence of Arunachal Pradesh BJP chief over a disputed power project.
Arunachal Pradesh witnessed a violent outbreak on Thursday as protesters set ablaze the regional office of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and a nearby police station. The arson was part of a broader agitation against a proposed power project that local groups claim will affect the environment and livelihoods.
In the same wave of unrest, the residence of the state BJP chief was ransacked and its windows smashed, prompting police to cordon off the area. No casualties have been reported, but the incidents have heightened tensions between the government and opposition activists.
Authorities have launched an investigation and deployed additional security personnel to prevent further damage. The NHPC project, still under review, remains a flashpoint as stakeholders await a final decision from the state administration.
The incidents underscore the fragile law‑and‑order situation in the hill state, where infrastructure projects often trigger strong local opposition.
