The National Highways Authority of India announced that its 1033 highway helpline will be upgraded with artificial‑intelligence tools and real‑time vehicle tracking to speed up emergency response.

NHAI said it will modernise the 1033 toll‑free highway helpline, which currently handles distress calls from motorists across the national highway network.
The revamp will embed AI algorithms that can automatically categorise complaints, prioritise critical incidents and dispatch assistance without human delay. In addition, GPS‑based tracking will allow control rooms to monitor the location of rescue teams and guide them to the exact spot of the breakdown.
Officials expect the technology to cut average response times by a significant margin and improve safety outcomes on busy corridors. The upgrade is part of the broader Digital India push to bring smart solutions to public infrastructure.
Implementation is slated to begin later this year, with pilot testing on selected stretches before a nationwide rollout. NHAI will collaborate with technology partners and state traffic police to ensure seamless integration.
