The National Highways Authority of India has given the green light for six foot overbridges along the Jammu‑Srinagar highway, aiming to improve traffic flow and safety.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has formally approved the construction of six foot overbridges on the Jammu‑Srinagar highway. The move is part of a broader effort to upgrade the critical arterial road that links the summer and winter capitals of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the approval, the overbridges will be positioned at key crossing points where pedestrian traffic is heavy and vehicle congestion is common. By providing grade‑separated pathways, the structures are expected to reduce the risk of accidents involving pedestrians and streamline the movement of vehicles, especially during peak travel seasons.

NHAI officials indicated that the project will be executed under existing highway improvement programmes, with detailed design and tendering processes to follow in the coming weeks. The authority has not disclosed a specific completion date, but the infrastructure is slated to be operational before the upcoming winter months, when traffic on the highway typically surges.

Stakeholders, including local transport unions and resident associations, have welcomed the decision, citing long‑standing concerns over safety on the narrow and winding sections of the route. The foot overbridges are seen as a vital step toward modernising the highway and enhancing connectivity across the region.
