NFF Blocks Draft Water Metro Policy, Warns of Threat to Fishermen

The National Fishermen's Federation has rejected the draft National Water Metro Policy, arguing it endangers fishing communities across India.

The National Fishermen's Federation (NFF) has formally opposed the draft National Water Metro Policy, stating that the proposed plan poses a serious threat to fishing communities nationwide.

The policy, which aims to develop a network of water-based public transport corridors, has been welcomed by some urban planners but critics argue it could lead to the loss of traditional fishing grounds and increased pollution in coastal waters.

NFF representatives highlighted concerns that large-scale infrastructure projects would displace small-scale fishers, restrict access to key fishing spots, and degrade marine ecosystems essential for their livelihoods.

The federation has called for a comprehensive review of the draft, insisting that fishermen’s interests be incorporated into any future revisions of the policy.
