The Northeast Frontier Railway and the Manipur state administration held talks to explore a direct railway corridor linking Imphal with Guwahati, aiming to boost regional connectivity.

Representatives of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) met with officials of the Manipur government to examine the feasibility of a direct rail corridor between Imphal and Guwahati. The proposal seeks to shorten travel time, facilitate freight movement, and integrate Manipur more closely with the rest of the Northeast rail network.

During the discussions, both sides highlighted the strategic importance of linking the capital city with Assam's major rail hub, which could spur economic activity and tourism in the region. Technical assessments, land acquisition requirements, and funding mechanisms were identified as key issues to be addressed in subsequent meetings.

The NFR has previously focused on expanding rail lines in the Northeast, and the Manipur administration views the Guwahati link as a priority infrastructure project. Officials indicated that a detailed project report will be prepared within the next few months, subject to approval from the Ministry of Railways.

If approved, the direct line could become operational within the next five to seven years, offering a faster alternative to the existing circuitous routes that rely on road transport for much of the journey.
