NEZCC director Alobo Naga has called for urgent measures to document and protect the state’s indigenous knowledge systems, warning that rapid cultural loss threatens future generations.

In a recent statement, Alobo Naga, director of the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), highlighted the accelerating erosion of Nagaland’s traditional knowledge and urged immediate preservation efforts. He emphasized that the rich repository of indigenous practices—ranging from herbal medicine and sustainable agriculture to oral histories and craft techniques—faces extinction without coordinated action.

Naga’s appeal underscores the role of NEZCC as a custodian of cultural heritage, tasked with facilitating documentation, research, and community‑based transmission of these practices. He called on scholars, local elders, and civil‑society groups to collaborate in creating comprehensive archives and educational modules that can be integrated into school curricula.

The director also appealed to the state government and private donors for dedicated funding, suggesting the establishment of a grant scheme to support fieldwork and digital preservation projects. By securing financial and institutional backing, he argued, Nagaland can safeguard its intangible heritage for future generations while also promoting cultural tourism and sustainable development.

Experts note that similar preservation drives across the Northeast have yielded positive outcomes, and Naga’s call aligns with broader national policies aimed at protecting India’s diverse cultural ecosystems.
