Nepal FM says two‑thirds of its trade is with India, calls ties ‘very strong’

Kathmandu – Nepal’s Foreign Minister emphasized the pivotal role of India in Nepal’s economy, noting that roughly two‑thirds of the Himalayan nation’s trade flows through its southern neighbour. The minister underscored that this economic interdependence underpins a "very strong" diplomatic relationship between the two countries.

The statement was made during a recent press briefing in Kathmandu, where the minister also reiterated Nepal’s commitment to deepening cooperation across trade, energy and connectivity sectors. He pointed to ongoing projects such as cross‑border road links and electricity trade that further cement the partnership.

Analysts say the high share of Indian trade reflects both geographic proximity and historic ties, while also highlighting Nepal’s reliance on Indian markets for imports and exports. The minister’s remarks come as both governments explore ways to diversify trade while maintaining the robust bilateral framework.

The foreign ministry’s comments are expected to shape upcoming negotiations on customs facilitation and tariff reductions, aiming to boost trade volumes and reduce transaction costs for businesses on both sides.
