Nearly 598 km of Rural Roads to be Built in Five J&K Districts under Rs 1,503 crore PMGSY Scheme

The central government will fund the construction of almost 598 km of rural roads across five districts of Jammu and Kashmir, allocating Rs 1,503 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
The Ministry of Rural Development has approved a Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) project that will add nearly 598 kilometres of new rural roads across five districts of Jammu and Kashmir. The scheme, valued at Rs 1,503 crore, aims to improve connectivity for remote villages and facilitate access to markets, health centres and schools.
The selected districts will receive a mix of paved and all‑weather roads designed to meet the standards set by the PMGSY. Construction is slated to begin in the coming weeks, with an expected completion timeline of three to four years, subject to terrain challenges and seasonal weather.
Officials said the investment will generate local employment, boost agricultural supply chains, and strengthen overall socio‑economic development in the region. The project also aligns with the government's broader push to bridge infrastructure gaps in the northern states.
Monitoring committees comprising state and central officials will oversee the execution to ensure quality and timely delivery. Once operational, the new road network is expected to reduce travel time significantly for residents of the hilly districts.
