A national-level workshop convened experts to discuss the conservation and research of over 657 orchid species native to Arunachal Pradesh.
The workshop brought together botanists, conservationists and policy makers from across India to examine the remarkable orchid diversity of Arunachal Pradesh, a state that records more than 657 native species. Participants reviewed recent taxonomic surveys and highlighted the ecological importance of these epiphytic plants in the region's forest ecosystems.
Orchid species in Arunachal are considered indicators of forest health, and many are endemic or rare. The forum underscored the urgent need for systematic field studies, habitat protection and the development of ex‑situ conservation measures to safeguard this botanical wealth.
Delegates agreed that coordinated research programmes and community‑based conservation initiatives will be essential to preserve the orchids amid growing pressures from land‑use change and climate variability.
