The town of Namchi in Sikkim is adopting a smart, sustainable, climate‑ready urban planning framework to modernise infrastructure and protect the environment.
Namchi, a hill town in Sikkim, has unveiled a comprehensive urban planning strategy that prioritises smart technology, sustainability and climate resilience. The plan outlines the integration of digital infrastructure, renewable energy sources and efficient public transport to reduce the city’s carbon footprint.
Key components include the installation of smart street lighting, solar‑powered public amenities and the development of green corridors to enhance air quality. The strategy also calls for the expansion of rainwater harvesting systems and the implementation of advanced waste‑management protocols.
To address the region’s vulnerability to flooding and landslides, the plan incorporates climate‑adapted drainage systems and early‑warning mechanisms. Local authorities are collaborating with environmental experts and community groups to ensure that the initiatives are both effective and inclusive.
The city council has announced that the new framework will be phased in over the next five years, with regular monitoring to assess progress and make adjustments as needed.
