Nagaland Christians rally against FCRA changes and mandatory Vande Mataram chant

Christian groups in Nagaland staged protests over recent amendments to the FCRA and a new rule requiring the singing of Vande Mataram.
Christian communities across Nagaland took to the streets to voice opposition to the central government's recent amendment of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). The amendment seeks tighter oversight of foreign donations to NGOs and religious bodies, a move that churches fear could restrict their funding streams.
At the same time, a separate directive mandating the singing of the national song Vande Mataram in public gatherings has been incorporated into the same regulatory package. Protesters argue that compulsory rendition of the song infringes on their religious freedom and cultural autonomy.
Organisers of the demonstrations said the combined measures represent an attempt to impose a uniform national identity on diverse faith groups. While the protests remained largely peaceful, participants called on the government to withdraw the provisions and engage in dialogue with affected communities.
State officials have not yet issued a formal response, but the issue is expected to feature in upcoming discussions between the central ministry and representatives of Nagaland's Christian bodies.
