A proposal to enlarge Muzaffarpur Municipal Corporation has been drafted, covering 47 villages across 16 panchayats and raising the city’s area to 53 sq km with a population exceeding five lakh.
The Muzaffarpur Municipal Corporation (Nagar Nigam) is set to undergo a major territorial expansion, according to a proposal currently under preparation. The plan calls for the inclusion of 47 villages that fall under 16 surrounding panchayats, effectively extending the corporation’s jurisdiction.
If approved, the municipal area will rise from the present 32 square kilometres to about 53 square kilometres. This increase is expected to push the resident count beyond the five‑lakh mark, reshaping the city’s demographic profile.
Local authorities say the expansion aims to bring better civic services, infrastructure development, and streamlined governance to the newly added rural localities. The proposal is being reviewed by state officials before any formal decision is taken.
Stakeholders, including village representatives, have been briefed on the potential benefits and administrative changes that will accompany the merger into the municipal framework. The final decision will determine the timeline for implementing the expanded boundaries.
