The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board has sanctioned Rs 19.18 crore for a Museum of Music at Gwalior’s historic Motimahal, aimed at conserving Tansen’s memory and India’s classical music heritage.

Gwalior’s iconic Motimahal complex will soon house a Museum of Music, a project approved by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board with a budget of Rs 19.18 crore. The museum is intended to serve as a repository of artifacts, manuscripts and instruments linked to the legendary 16th‑century vocalist Tansen, whose contributions shaped Hindustani classical music.

The initiative reflects a broader effort by state authorities to promote cultural tourism and safeguard intangible heritage. Officials say the museum will feature interactive displays, audio‑visual archives and a performance space where traditional musicians can showcase their art.

Construction is slated to begin later this year, with the museum expected to open to the public within the next two to three years. Stakeholders anticipate that the facility will attract scholars, students and tourists, bolstering Gwalior’s reputation as a historic centre of Indian music.

The project underscores the continued relevance of classical music in contemporary India and highlights the government’s commitment to investing in cultural infrastructure.
