Mumbai is experiencing a record‑breaking heatwave with temperatures soaring above 40°C, officials say the extreme heat is linked to rising temperatures in Madhya Pradesh.
Mumbai has entered a record‑breaking heatwave, with daily highs exceeding 40°C for the first time in recent history. Meteorological reports indicate that the extreme temperatures are a result of a persistent high‑pressure system affecting the western coast.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heat advisory for the city, urging residents to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak hours. Health officials have warned of increased risks of heatstroke and dehydration, especially among the elderly and children.
Analysts point to the simultaneous rise in temperatures in Madhya Pradesh as a contributing factor. The central heatwave has stretched across the interior, creating a pressure gradient that funnels hot air towards the western coast, intensifying the heat in Mumbai.
The city’s municipal corporation has activated emergency response teams and set up cooling centres in public spaces. Residents are advised to use fans, wear light clothing, and seek shade whenever possible.
