The Mumbai Crime Branch arrested members of a cross‑state network that was illegally providing call detail records, subscriber information and real‑time location data to clients.
The Mumbai Crime Branch carried out a coordinated operation that led to the arrest of several individuals linked to an inter‑state syndicate dealing in telecom data. Investigators seized computers, storage devices and documentation that detailed the collection and distribution of call detail records (CDRs), subscriber databases and live location feeds.
According to the police, the racket supplied this sensitive information to a range of clients, enabling them to monitor phone activity and track the movements of targeted persons. The data was reportedly harvested without the consent of the users and in violation of privacy and telecommunications regulations.
Authorities said the arrested persons could face charges under the Information Technology Act, the Indian Telegraph Act and other relevant statutes. The Crime Branch has opened a broader inquiry to trace the network’s customers and to prevent further misuse of telecom data.
The bust underscores growing concerns over unauthorized access to digital communications in India and highlights the police’s focus on curbing illicit data‑trading operations.
