The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert for Mumbai, warning residents of temperatures exceeding 40°C and urging precautions against heat‑related illnesses.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) raised a heatwave alert for Mumbai on October 9, 2026, after forecasts projected daytime temperatures to climb beyond 40°C for the next several days. The agency highlighted that humidity levels will remain high, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration, especially among outdoor workers and the elderly.
Local authorities have activated emergency response teams and are coordinating with hospitals to ensure adequate medical supplies. Public health advisories advise residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours, and seek shade or air‑conditioned spaces whenever possible.
The city’s power utility has warned of potential strain on the electricity grid due to increased demand for cooling appliances. Residents are urged to conserve electricity where feasible and report any power outages promptly. The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and update the alert as conditions evolve.
