A sudden shortage of auto‑rickshaws and taxis in Mumbai has been linked to drivers being asked Marathi questions that are not part of the standard syllabus.

Mumbai's streets have seen a noticeable dip in the availability of auto‑rickshaws and taxis over the past few days. The shortage appears to stem from a new assessment in which drivers are presented with Marathi language questions that fall outside the official syllabus used for licensing.

Transport unions reported that many drivers, particularly those who do not speak Marathi fluently, are unable to clear the unexpected test, leading to temporary suspensions or refusals to operate until they receive clarification. As a result, commuters are experiencing longer wait times and higher fares.

City officials have acknowledged the issue and said they are reviewing the examination content to ensure it aligns with the established licensing framework. In the meantime, authorities are urging drivers to seek guidance from the transport department to resolve the matter swiftly.
