Police in Bongaigaon, Assam, have detained a moneylender accused of harassing a debtor, an act alleged to have contributed to the man's suicide.

Bongaigaon police on Saturday arrested a local moneylender following a complaint that his alleged harassment of a debtor may have driven the man to take his own life. The deceased, identified only as a resident of the city, was found dead in his home, and relatives pointed to repeated pressure for loan repayment as a possible trigger.

Investigators said the moneylender was taken into custody under sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with harassment and abetment of suicide. A formal statement from the police indicated that they are examining financial records and interviewing witnesses to establish a direct link between the lender's actions and the tragedy.

The case has sparked concerns in the region about predatory lending practices, especially in rural Assam where informal credit sources are common. Local NGOs have called for stricter regulation and awareness campaigns to protect vulnerable borrowers.

Authorities have not disclosed the name of the arrested individual, citing ongoing investigations. The police have promised to keep the public informed as the probe progresses.
