Fast bowler Mohammad Shami announced his retirement from Test cricket, and his former coach Badaruddin Siddiqui said the bowler had lost hope of a comeback after being left out of the New Zealand series.
Mohammad Shami confirmed his decision to step away from Test cricket, ending a career that saw him become one of India’s most reliable fast‑bowling options in the format. The announcement came shortly before his childhood coach, Badaruddin Siddiqui, spoke to the media about the bowler’s recent struggles.
Siddiqui, who coached Shami during his formative years, said the pacer had been dealing with persistent issues for an extended period. He added that after being omitted from the New Zealand tour, Shami stopped expecting a recall to the Test side and chose to retire from the format.
Shami’s exit leaves a gap in India’s pace attack, which has relied on his ability to generate pace and swing under varied conditions. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not issued an official statement, analysts suggest younger bowlers will now be given a larger role in the Test squad.
Fans and former teammates have taken to social media to thank Shami for his contributions, highlighting his performances in overseas victories and his role in India’s 2021 World Test Championship triumph.
