Mohali to Deploy 100 Electric Buses Within Six Months, Reviving Stalled City Service

The Punjab Transport Department announced that 100 electric buses will be introduced in Mohali over the next six months, aiming to rejuvenate a city bus system that has been dormant for years.
The city bus network in Mohali, which has remained largely inactive for several years, is set to receive a major boost as the state transport authority unveiled a plan to roll out one hundred electric buses within the next half‑year. The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise public transport and reduce reliance on diesel‑powered vehicles.
Under the scheme, the electric buses will be procured through a combination of state funding and central government subsidies aimed at promoting clean mobility. The vehicles are expected to be deployed on key routes that connect residential areas with commercial hubs, with the first batch slated to start operations by the end of the current month.
Transport officials anticipate that the e‑bus fleet will cut traffic congestion and lower air‑pollution levels in Mohali, aligning with Punjab’s environmental targets. The move also promises to improve commuter comfort and reliability, offering a viable alternative to private cars and two‑wheelers.
While detailed route maps and fare structures are still being finalised, the department has assured commuters that the service will be integrated with existing transport modes, including the metro and regional rail, to create a seamless travel experience across the city.
