The Mohali municipal authority has activated Section 163, requiring all landlords to verify tenants and prohibiting public gatherings in rental premises.

The municipal administration of Mohali announced the enforcement of Section 163 of the Punjab Rent Control Act, effective immediately. Under the new rule, landlords must conduct a formal verification of any prospective tenant before signing a lease, including identity proof and background checks. The regulation also bans any form of public gathering or assembly within rented residential units, aiming to curb illegal events and maintain public order.

Authorities said the move responds to rising complaints about unverified occupants and unauthorized parties in rental properties. Enforcement officers will inspect premises and can levy penalties on landlords who fail to comply. The municipal council will monitor the impact of the rule and may issue further guidelines.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions from the local housing market. While tenant‑rights groups welcome the added security, some property owners expressed concerns about the administrative burden and potential delays in renting out units. The municipal body has promised a streamlined online portal for verification to ease the process.
