At the BRICS summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the presence of President Xi Jinping, warned that turning critical minerals into geopolitical weapons could destabilise global supply chains.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the BRICS leaders' gathering while President Xi Jinping of China was present. He highlighted the growing strategic importance of critical minerals such as rare earths, lithium and cobalt, which underpin modern technologies and defence systems.
Modi warned that any attempt to weaponise these essential resources could disrupt global supply chains and create new geopolitical tensions. He urged member countries to avoid using mineral access as a tool of coercion.
The Indian leader called for a transparent, rules‑based framework that would ensure equitable access and prevent the politicisation of mineral markets. The remarks were part of broader discussions on cooperation in mining, processing and trade among the six BRICS nations.
