MLC elections took place across several Indian states today, highlighting the role of Legislative Councils and explaining why only a handful of states maintain an upper house.
MLC elections were conducted today in several Indian states as part of the regular cycle for upper houses. The Legislative Council, or Vidhan Parishad, acts as the upper chamber in states that have a bicameral legislature, providing a forum for review and scrutiny of bills passed by the lower house. Only 12 of the 28 states have a Legislative Council, as the Constitution permits states to decide whether to maintain a second house. The elections today will fill seats that have become vacant due to resignations, deaths or the expiry of terms.
