Hnahthial district in Mizoram has been named a ‘Surakshit District’ for its exemplary HIV/AIDS control programme, a recognition that has spurred local leaders to aim for the next tier, ‘Surakshit Plus’. The award, given by the state health department, highlighted the district’s success in reducing new infections and improving treatment coverage. ‘Surakshit Plus’ is a higher certification that requires sustained low incidence rates, robust testing infrastructure and community engagement. Officials say the district will strengthen outreach, expand testing sites and enhance data monitoring to meet the criteria and secure the upgraded status.
