The Mizoram government has announced plans to finish the 2027 national census ahead of all other states, aiming to set a precedent for timely data collection.
Mizoram's state administration disclosed its intention to be the first Indian state to wrap up the 2027 national census, a move it says will help in accurate policy planning and resource allocation. The decision was communicated through an official statement released earlier this week, highlighting the state's commitment to efficient data management.
State officials indicated that a dedicated task force will coordinate with the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner to accelerate field operations, digitise records and ensure that enumeration is completed well before the central deadline. By achieving early completion, Mizoram hopes to provide a reliable demographic baseline for both state and central schemes.
While the initiative is praised for its proactive approach, authorities acknowledge logistical challenges such as reaching remote villages in hilly terrain and ensuring the safety of enumerators. They have pledged additional manpower and technology support to mitigate these issues.
If successful, Mizoram's early finish could serve as a model for other states, prompting the central government to consider staggered timelines for future censuses across the country.
