The state government of Mizoram is evaluating scientific approaches to manage a growing pest infestation threatening its areca nut plantations.
Mizoram's areca nut growers have reported a sharp rise in pest activity that is damaging crops and reducing yields across the state's plantations. Areca nut, a cash crop for many small‑holder farmers in the region, faces losses that could affect local incomes and supply chains.
In response, the Mizoram state agriculture department has begun assessing scientific solutions, including integrated pest‑management techniques and biological control agents. Officials say they are consulting with agricultural research institutes and entomologists to identify environmentally safe methods that can be scaled for local farms.
Field trials are slated to start later this season, focusing on pheromone traps, natural predators and targeted bio‑pesticides. The aim is to provide farmers with effective tools that minimise chemical use while protecting the crop.
If successful, the initiative could stabilize areca nut production in Mizoram and serve as a model for pest‑affected horticulture in neighboring states.
