The Mizoram government opened a new edible‑oil processing unit in Falkawn village, aiming to boost local agriculture and reduce dependence on imports.
Mizoram's minister for agriculture and horticulture inaugurated an edible‑oil processing plant in the remote village of Falkawn on Thursday. The facility, equipped with modern extraction and refining equipment, is expected to process locally grown oilseeds such as mustard and sesame, creating value‑added products for the state market.
State officials said the plant will generate employment for villagers and help farmers obtain better prices for their harvests by providing a nearby processing hub. The project is part of Mizoram's broader strategy to develop agro‑industries and achieve self‑sufficiency in essential commodities.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by local leaders and representatives of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, who highlighted the plant's role in reducing the state's reliance on imported edible oils and fostering sustainable rural development.
The plant is slated to commence commercial operations within the next few weeks, with an initial processing capacity of several thousand tonnes per annum, according to ministry sources.
