The Meghalaya government has issued a directive requiring all restaurants, cafés and food shops to display their FSSAI licence number on customer bills and menus, with a compliance deadline of 30 days.

The state administration of Meghalaya announced on Monday that every food‑service outlet must prominently print its Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licence number on both the bill and the menu. The order, issued under the state’s consumer protection framework, gives establishments a 30‑day window to comply, after which penalties may be imposed.

The move aims to enhance transparency for consumers, allowing them to verify that the establishment is legally registered and adheres to national food‑safety standards. Officials said that visible licence numbers will help curb the sale of sub‑standard or unregistered food products.

The Directorate of Food Safety in Shillong will monitor compliance and conduct spot checks. Businesses that fail to display the required information within the stipulated period could face fines or temporary closure, according to the notification.

Industry representatives welcomed the clarity but cautioned that smaller vendors might need additional time to update printed materials. The government has promised to provide a template for the licence display to ease the transition.
