The Meghalaya government has issued a directive requiring meat and fish sellers to use colour‑coded knives and chopping boards to improve hygiene and prevent cross‑contamination.
The state government of Meghalaya has announced a new food‑safety directive that obliges all meat and fish vendors to adopt colour‑coded knives and chopping boards. Under the order, each type of utensil will be assigned a specific colour to clearly separate meat‑handling tools from those used for fish, thereby reducing the risk of cross‑contamination.
Local health officials will monitor compliance and sellers are expected to replace existing equipment within the timeframe stipulated in the notification. The regulation also empowers authorities to levy penalties on vendors who fail to adhere to the colour‑coding requirement.
The move aligns with broader efforts by Indian food‑safety agencies to standardise hygiene practices in wet markets and is consistent with recommendations from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
