Lawyers in Meghalaya will halt court appearances starting October 1 and have scheduled a statewide rally for October 5, escalating the dispute with the Attorney‑General.
Meghalaya’s bar association announced that its members will refrain from appearing in any court from 1 October, citing an intensifying row with the state Attorney‑General. The decision follows a series of disagreements over recent legal opinions issued by the AG’s office, which many senior counsel say undermine judicial independence.
A coordinated mass rally has been slated for 5 October, with lawyers planning to converge on the state capital and other major districts to demonstrate their protest. Organisers have urged participants to maintain a peaceful stance while demanding a meeting with the AG to resolve the impasse.
