The Meghalaya High Court has condemned the state government for not clearing pending judicial bills since 2014, directing a 9% interest rate and a formal inquiry into the matter.
The Meghalaya High Court on Tuesday criticized the state government for its failure to settle judicial bills that have been pending since 2014. The court directed that a 9% annual interest be applied to the outstanding amounts.
The order follows a long‑standing dispute over the payment of bills issued by the judiciary, which the state has repeatedly delayed. The court said that the delay has caused financial strain on the judicial system and called for immediate settlement.
In addition to the interest directive, the High Court ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the reasons behind the prolonged delay. The inquiry will examine the state’s financial management and the procedures used to approve and pay judicial bills.
The decision is expected to prompt the state government to expedite the payment process and may lead to further scrutiny of its fiscal practices in relation to the judiciary.
