Meghalaya Deputy CM says party switches are normal as W.R. Kharlukhi quits NPP

Deputy Chief Minister Bindo L. Marak addressed reporters in Shillong, stating that the movement of politicians between parties is a routine aspect of democratic politics in Meghalaya. He emphasized that joining and leaving a party should be viewed as a normal process rather than a crisis.

His remarks followed the announcement that W.R. Kharlukhi, a long‑time member of the National People’s Party and former minister, has formally quit the party. Kharlukhi did not provide detailed reasons for his departure in the public statement.

Marak reassured that Kharlukhi's exit will not destabilise the state's political equation and that the NPP remains focused on its development agenda. He added that the party welcomes new members while respecting individual choices.

Political observers note that Kharlukhi's departure could influence upcoming electoral calculations, but the deputy chief minister downplayed any immediate impact on the party’s strength.

The National People’s Party has yet to issue an official response to the resignation.
