The state government of Meghalaya is moving ahead with the Nonghali landfill project, a waste‑management facility intended to serve the capital region and surrounding districts. Located near Shillong, the site is slated to replace older dumping grounds and improve solid‑waste processing capacity.
Deputy Chief Minister B. B. Dhar told reporters that the project is awaiting the final environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. He indicated that the clearance is expected within weeks, after which the contract for construction will be awarded.
The clearance is crucial for the project’s timeline, as it will allow the state to commence earth‑moving and infrastructure work by the end of the year. Officials say the landfill will incorporate modern leachate treatment and methane capture systems, aligning with national waste‑management guidelines.
State authorities have emphasized that the facility will reduce illegal dumping and health hazards in urban areas. Once operational, the landfill is projected to handle several hundred tonnes of waste daily, supporting Meghalaya’s broader sanitation and environmental goals.
