Meghalaya Collectives has opened a new retail outlet in Shillong to give rural producers a direct channel to urban consumers.
Meghalaya Collectives, a cooperative platform that aggregates products from the state's villages, inaugurated a retail outlet in Shillong on Monday. The store, located in the city centre, is intended to serve as a permanent marketplace where farmers, artisans and other rural producers can display and sell their goods directly to city dwellers.
The initiative aims to reduce the reliance on middlemen, improve price realization for producers and increase consumer awareness of locally sourced items. By situating the outlet in Shillong, the collective hopes to tap into the capital's larger consumer base and tourism traffic, thereby expanding market reach for products ranging from organic vegetables to hand‑crafted textiles.
Officials from Meghalaya Collectives said the store will operate on a rotating inventory model, allowing a wider variety of rural products to be showcased throughout the year. The opening is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the state's agrarian economy and promote sustainable livelihoods for its rural communities.
