The Meghalaya chief minister announced that state mining revenue will be redirected to support livelihood projects for local communities.
Shillong, Meghalaya – The chief minister affirmed that the state will channel all revenue generated from mining activities back into programmes that enhance the livelihoods of local people. In a press briefing, the CM emphasized that the move is aimed at ensuring that the benefits of mineral extraction reach the communities most affected by it.
The statement comes as the state government seeks to balance economic gains from its rich mineral resources with sustainable development goals. Officials noted that mining royalties have historically contributed a significant share of the state’s budget, but a larger proportion will now be earmarked for skill development, agricultural diversification and small‑scale enterprise support.
Stakeholders, including tribal leaders and NGOs, welcomed the pledge, saying it could mitigate the socio‑economic disruptions often linked to mining operations. The government has not disclosed a detailed timeline, but indicated that the reinvestment plan will be rolled out in phases over the next financial year.
