The chief minister of Meghalaya spoke with Assam's chief minister to address recent attacks on Assam‑registered vehicles and tourists in Shillong.
Meghalaya's chief minister held a telephone conversation with the chief minister of Assam after a spate of incidents in Shillong targeting vehicles registered in Assam and visitors from the neighboring state. The discussion focused on the nature of the attacks, the safety of tourists and the steps required to restore calm in the capital city.
Officials in Shillong reported that several Assam‑registered cars were damaged and a few tourists faced harassment, prompting concerns among local authorities and the tourism sector. Both state governments said they would cooperate to investigate the incidents and identify those responsible.
The Meghalaya chief minister assured the Assam counterpart that security forces would be deployed to vulnerable areas and that a joint monitoring mechanism could be set up to prevent further escalation. The Assam chief minister welcomed the cooperation and urged swift action to protect its citizens travelling in Meghalaya.
