Meghalaya CM directs comprehensive study on maternal anaemia

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has mandated a detailed survey to assess anaemia prevalence among mothers in Meghalaya.
In a recent announcement, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the state government will commission a special study to gauge the scale of anaemia among mothers across the region. The initiative aims to collect reliable data on haemoglobin levels, dietary habits and access to health services among pregnant and lactating women.
Health officials will partner with local hospitals, community health workers and research institutions to design the survey methodology and conduct field visits in both urban and rural districts. The findings are expected to inform targeted nutrition programmes, iron‑supplement distribution and awareness campaigns.
The move comes amid growing concerns over maternal health indicators in India's Northeast, where national surveys have highlighted higher-than‑average rates of iron‑deficiency anaemia among women of child‑bearing age. By establishing a state‑specific evidence base, the government hopes to tailor interventions and reduce related complications such as low birth weight and maternal fatigue.
The study’s results will be presented to the state health ministry later this year, with recommendations slated for inclusion in Meghalaya's upcoming health policy revisions.
