Chief Minister Conrad Sangma of Meghalaya has signed a memorandum of understanding worth ₹344 crore to launch a catchment protection initiative aimed at safeguarding water resources.
Meghalaya's chief minister, Conrad Sangma, formally signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) worth ₹344 crore on Thursday, committing the state to a comprehensive catchment protection project. The agreement was signed in the presence of senior officials and outlines a multi‑year plan to secure the region's river basins and upstream areas.
The initiative will focus on afforestation, soil erosion control, and the construction of small check‑dams to improve water retention. Authorities expect the measures to enhance groundwater recharge, reduce flood risk, and support sustainable agriculture across vulnerable districts.
Funding for the project will be drawn from the state’s dedicated environmental budget, supplemented by central government grants under the National Mission for Clean Ganga and related schemes. The MoU also calls for technical assistance from national forest and water resource agencies.
State officials say the program aligns with Meghalaya’s broader climate‑resilience strategy and will generate employment opportunities for local communities engaged in plantation and maintenance activities.
