Chief Minister Conrad Sangma inaugurated Meghalaya's first skatepark in the Garo Hills region, creating a new recreational venue for local youth.

Meghalaya's Chief Minister Conrad Sangma officially opened the state's inaugural skatepark in the Garo Hills area on Monday. The facility, built on a modest parcel of land, features concrete ramps, rails and a flat‑ground zone designed to meet international standards for skateboarding and BMX riding.
The inauguration was attended by local officials, sports enthusiasts and a handful of young skaters who tested the new tracks shortly after the ribbon‑cutting ceremony. Sangma highlighted the project as part of the government's effort to promote sports, provide safe recreational spaces, and curb youth drift towards harmful activities.
State authorities say the skatepark will be managed by the Meghalaya Sports Authority and will host training camps, local competitions and community events. The project, funded through the state's sports development budget, aims to put Meghalaya on the map for emerging extreme‑sports talent.
The Garo Hills region, traditionally known for its scenic landscapes, now gains a modern sports infrastructure that could attract visitors from neighboring states and encourage tourism linked to adventure sports.
Further details on scheduled events and facility usage will be released by the sports department in the coming weeks.
