Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced that none of the eight BJP legislators elected in the recent by‑polls will be given cabinet positions.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Thursday that the eight legislators who won seats for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the latest by‑elections will not be inducted into his cabinet.

The decision was communicated during a press briefing at the state secretariat, where Sangma emphasized that cabinet expansion would be considered only after a comprehensive review of the government's priorities and the need for stability.

Analysts note that the move reflects the coalition dynamics in the state, where the BJP is a junior partner to the National People's Party (NPP) led by Sangma, and that the chief minister is keen to avoid perceptions of rewarding new entrants prematurely.

The eight BJP MLAs will continue as legislators without ministerial portfolios.
