Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma allocates Rs 5 lakh to restore Netaji Bose bust in Shillong

Shillong's municipal authorities will receive a grant of Rs 5 lakh, sanctioned by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, to undertake the restoration of the bronze bust of freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose. The allocation, announced on Monday, is intended to address the wear and corrosion that have affected the monument over the years.

The Bose bust, installed in a prominent public square in Shillong, has long been a symbol of the city's respect for India's independence legacy. Over time, exposure to weather elements has led to surface discoloration and minor structural damage, prompting calls from local heritage groups for conservation work.

The state government's Department of Art and Culture has been tasked with overseeing the restoration, which is expected to be completed within the next two months. Officials will engage specialized conservators to clean, treat, and re‑coat the bronze, ensuring the statue's durability for future generations.

By funding the project, the Meghalaya administration underscores its commitment to preserving historical monuments and promoting cultural tourism in the region.
