The Chief Minister of Meghalaya has approved a Rs 24.27 crore redevelopment plan for Malki market in Shillong, aiming to transform it into a regional economic hub.
Shillong’s historic Malki market is set to undergo a major facelift after the state government approved a Rs 24.27 crore redevelopment project. The plan, unveiled by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, includes modernising the market’s infrastructure, improving sanitation, and creating dedicated zones for traders and small businesses.
The upgrade aims to boost local commerce by attracting more shoppers and vendors, thereby positioning Malki as a key economic hub for the northeast region. Officials said the project will be executed in phases to minimise disruption to existing traders.
Construction is expected to begin later this year, with completion targeted within two years. The government has pledged to involve local stakeholders throughout the process to ensure the market retains its cultural character while meeting contemporary commercial standards.
